What will happen on my tour or workshop and tour?

What makes Kirsteen's Tour unique? A real Scottish artist who grew up in the art scene in Scotland and was educated in Edinburgh's Heriot Watt University.

As someone deeply connected to Scottish art, I bring an authentic perspective to my tours of the National Gallery of Scotland. Growing up surrounded by Scottish art, with parents who met at the Glasgow School of Art and were close friends with renowned Scottish artist Alastair Grey, I developed a rich understanding of the of the art I share today.

On my tours, I focus not only on the historical aspects of the works but on the personal connections I have to the artists and their processes. I explore the methods such as tonal value—the light and shadow that shapes the mood of a piece—and show visitors how Scottish artists, both past and present, use these techniques to create atmosphere in their work. By sharing the stories of these artists and their tools, I offer a deeper, more personal insight into their creative journeys. This approach gives a true appreciation for Scottish art, one that goes beyond facts and dates to connect the viewer with the soul of the work.

Having taught art, exhibited throughout my life, and studied art, design, and photography at Heriot-Watt University, I offer a well-rounded perspective on the art in the National Gallery of Scotland. My experience and academic study provide a deeper understanding of the creative process.

On my tours, I focus on the artistry behind each piece, exploring how Scottish artists, past and present, used their skills and tools to convey emotion. I highlight their material and technique choices, such as how they manipulated light and shadow to create atmosphere.

This approach helps deepen visitors' appreciation for Scottish art by focusing on the creative journey and making the artwork more personal and meaningful.
